Research
- Black, L. J. (2012-2017). A qualitative case study which included data spanning six years of a collaborative early field experience for general education secondary teacher candidates working with grades 9-12 English language learners in a local Title I school district. This study was exploratory, aimed at understanding how teacher candidates constructed meaning from an early field experience. The purpose of this study was to better understand how to prepare pre-service teachers for the increasingly diverse student populations of twenty-first century classrooms.
- Black, L. J. (2015). A qualitative case study of how two key second-order historical concepts change and continuity in history- were taught and understood by high school students in one Advanced Placement World History course in a rural high school in Texas. The focus of this study was on student understanding of these concepts as well as on the impact of particular instructional strategies and models used to facilitate student learning of these temporal dimensions. (Paper combining 2nd study below, 2017-2018, has been submitted for publication 2021)
- Black, L. J. (2008-2014). This qualitative case study included data spanning six years of the implementation of an electronic-mentoring component in a secondary teacher preparation program in which prospective teachers were — 9 —
- paired with rural secondary students from schools serving predominantly low-income families in order to achieve an enhanced understanding of the needs of adolescents by preservice teachers and enhanced college and career readiness by secondary students. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the benefits that preservice teachers identified as primary results of their participation in the e-mentoring process and the challenges. (Published 2015)
- Black, L. J. & J. Leonard. (2009). Building upon research in quality professional growth for educators, the authors of this study sought to critically examine one form of professional development for teachers of Advanced Placement World History® (APWH), participation in the Advanced Placement® World History Reading (Scoring). This was a qualitative case study involving focus group interviews of secondary APWH teachers serving as readers who scored the three APWH exam essays. The findings from this study indicated that participation in the process of scoring essays at the APWH Reading was a beneficial experience for participants, providing both an increase in content knowledge and pedagogical skills for working with APWH students, and demonstrating a quality professional growth experience for participants. (Published 2015)
- Black, L. J. (2017-2018). A qualitative case study of how two second-order historical concepts- change and continuity in history- were taught and understood by high school students in an Advanced Placement World History course in an urban high school in Virginia. The focus of this study was on student understanding of this concept as well as on the use of a particular strategy and a model which employ explicit vocabulary instruction and visual metaphors to facilitate student learning of this temporal dimension.
