Mission Statement

Our mission is to create an inclusive learning environment that inspires compassionate, evidence-informed practice through active teaching methods. We focus on research that improves clinical practice and deepens understanding of lived experiences. By bridging classroom and clinical learning, we prepare graduates for impactful audiology and speech-language pathology careers. Faculty mentorship in specialty clinics provides hands-on training, advancing both knowledge and practice. We are committed to fostering a supportive, interprofessional community that values communication and equips graduates to make a positive impact in their communities.

Strategic Plan

1. Excellence

1.1. The SPHS Department will demonstrate excellence and alignment with the university and college strategic enrollment growth eclipsing 20,000 students by 2028 via:

  • Development of a minor in SPHS
  • Development of relationships with high schools via:
    • Creating a list of at least 10 high school points of contact.
    • Scheduling recruitment meetings with at least five high schools per year.
  • Developing and disseminating recruitment resources.
    • On the departmental website
    • On social media
    • Within at least five high school visits per year
  • Track social media presence via yearly, data-driven analysis of social media engagement

1.2. The SPHS Department will demonstrate excellence in academic innovation through:

  • Faculty engagement by collectively attending or conducting 10 continuing education events focused on teaching methods.

1.3. The SPHS Department will demonstrate excellence via scholarship of significance through:

  • Maintenance of a yearly average publication rate of 1.46 book chapters and/or peer reviewed articles by tenure track or tenured faculty.
  • A collective total of faculty presentation of at least 10 research projects at international, national and/or state conferences per year.
  • Submission of at least 3 external grants each year from faculty in the department with at least one accepted for a minimum value of $50,000; with a five-year target of 2 accepted for a total value of $100, 000.
  • Mentorship of at least five student researchers each year across all faculty.
  • Engagement in five total Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research activities across all faculty.

1.4. The SPHS Department will honor and recognize excellence via:

  • Yearly dissemination by faculty of two clinical-excellence awards; one for a clinical speech-language pathology master’s student and one for a clinical audiology doctoral student.

 

2. Success

2.1. The SPHS Department will demonstrate pathways to success in alignment with the university and college strategic plans via:

  • Development of at least one community-college pathway per year.
  • Connection with at least one additional community college per year.

2.2. The SPHS Department will support student success in alignment with the university and college strategic plans via:

  • A maintained combined average Praxis pass rate of >80% over the most recent 3-year period for graduates of the AuD and MSLP programs.

2.3. The SPHS Department will support career readiness in alignment with the university strategic plan via:

  • A maintained combined average employment rate of >90% employment within one year of graduation in positions relevant to their degree and/or pursuit of advanced degrees or certificates for graduates of the AuD, MSLP, and SLPA programs.

 

3. Engagement

3.1. The SPHS Department will foster development of learning opportunities through campus and community connections via:

  • Departmental (faculty/student/student organization) participation in five campus and/or community events per year.

3.2. The SPHS Department will establish and maintain alumni connections via:

  • Establishing interest in serving on a departmental advisory council by surveying at least ten alumni.

3.3. The SPHS Department will establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships (e.g., industry partnerships) through:

  • Development of at least one new community contract per year.
  • Hosting of at least 15 support group meetings per year.
  • Attendance of at least five community screenings and health fairs per year.

Welcome to the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at 四虎影视. The programs in our department have an excellent reputation in academic and research foundations as well as clinical training.

Undergraduate Curriculum

Our undergraduate curriculum provides students with a complete overview of human communication and its disorders within the context of a broad liberal arts education. Students receive cutting-edge information about the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.

The curriculum includes the opportunity to observe therapy as well as participate in our LU Junior Clinician Program and LU SPHS Undergraduate Research Program. We have an active chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA), which has received the Silver Chapter Recognition for outreach to the community, educational opportunities, and social and fundraising activities.

Residential Graduate Programs

Our residential graduate programs, the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) and Master of Science (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology, are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the .

Faculty

Students in both programs benefit from individualized experiences and mentoring from outstanding faculty recognized as experts in their fields. The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and research, as well as getting to know you on an individual basis.

Speech-Language Pathology

Our Speech-Language Pathology program is committed to preparing competent and compassionate clinicians, motivated scholars, and ethical professionals for entry into the field of speech-language pathology.

Our curriculum covers the full range of normal and disordered human communication in children and adults. Coursework is supplemented by clinical experiences both on and off campus.

Doctor of Audiology

Students in our professional Doctor of Audiology program receive academic instruction in the scientific foundation of sound, auditory processes and behaviors and in the evaluation, diagnosis and non-medical treatment of hearing disorders.

Students complete their clinical training in a variety of settings that include medical centers, public schools, special education facilities and clinics across the United States.

Requirements for Graduate Program

To apply for 四虎影视’s residential Graduate Programs in Speech and Hearing Sciences – Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) or Master of Science (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology – all applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in communication disorders or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

Students are expected to have obtained a broad general education as a background to graduate study. For those who have earned other degrees, a leveling program may be required. Our department offers such a leveling program to assist these students.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) Program at 四虎影视 is designed to equip undergraduate students with the foundational knowledge and hands-on clinical training necessary to support individuals with communication disorders. Through a combination of comprehensive coursework and supervised clinical experiences, students gain the essential skills to provide speech and language therapy services under the supervision of a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Upon completion of a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and Disorders and taken required courses for the SLP-A program, graduates of the program are eligible to apply for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) in the State of Texas. This program prepares students to enter the workforce with the competence and confidence to serve populations that are in end of speech intervention across a variety of professional settings.

Vocology Certificate Program

Vocology is the study and practice of voice habilitation. For individuals interested in vocology, our department offers a Vocology Certificate Program to train vocologists. Courses toward the 四虎影视 Vocology Certificate are offered  with biannual enrollment.
